Kaboud mosque ( Blue mosque) was built in 1465 by order of Jahanshah the ruler of Kara Koyanlu dynasty which made Tabriz the capital of his kingdom . This monument is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The beauty of tile works and mosaic, as well as the combination of colors, made this mosque to be known as the turquoise of Islam. Unfortunately, The mosque was severely damaged in earthquake in 1779, deeply affected the building, and tarnishing its beauty. There are records of other construction such as monastery, library and school around the mosque that no trace of them can be found today. The mosque was reconstruction in 1973 by the late Reza Memaran Benam under the supervision of Iranian Ministry of Culture, where most of surviving tile works were secured on their place. One of the highlights of museum is the ceiling with gold and azure decorations. There is a crypt located in the southernmost part of the mosque including two tombs which were discovered during the renovation and it is said the tombs refer to the Jahanshah and his daughter.
